About Crusaders / Pastor Alton Jordan Biography

Rev. Dr. Alton Wayne Jordan was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Walter Jordan, Sr. and Betty E. Jordan.* He is the youngest of 10 children. 

In 1965, he was baptized at Hickory View Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. He attended Rocky Mount public schools and moved to Washington, DC after graduating from high school. As he began his adulthood journey, he became a member of New Image Community Baptist Church in Washington, DC under the leadership of Pastor Robert L. Walker, founder. In July 1986, shortly after the passing of Pastor Walker, Rev. Jordan was called into the ministry; he preached his initial sermon under the leadership of the interim Pastor, Dr. Sloan S. Hodges.*  In the same year, he received his ministerial license. 


He met his wife at New Image Community Baptist Church. In 1987, he married the former Lavern Billups, and together they have three daughters--Joy Nicole, Altonae Grace, and Alayne Faith; you can remember them as Joy, Grace, and Faith. He has one son-in-law Van Hall, and four beautiful grandchildren--Vaniah, Van, Jr., Javon, and Javin.  

Rev. Jordan attended several educational institutions: The University of the District of Columbia (formerly known as Federal City College); American University; DC Bible Institute; Andersonville Bible Seminary, and Faith Bible College and University, where he earned his Master’s Degree, Doctorate, and Ph.D. in Philosophy.  Rev. Jordan was mentored by one of his former instructors, who was also a Pastor. In November 1989, he was ordained at Hartsville Bible Church in Hartsville, South Carolina under the leadership of Pastor Jerome McFarland. In 1990, Rev. Jordan became an assistant pastor at Crusaders Baptist Church. In 1991, he became the Pastor of Crusaders Baptist Church and was installed on April 20, 1991, at Mt. Joy Baptist Church; the guest preacher was Dr. Eugene Weathers.* Rev. Jordan has been the pastor at Crusaders Baptist Church for 22 years.

He has been professionally affiliated with the DC Bible Institute Advisory Committee; Department of Interior Toastmasters Club; Ward 8 Community and Youth Service Program; Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse; and the National Baptist Conference. He served the people on a national level as an Equal Employment Opportunity Complaints Manager for the U.S. Department of the Interior; he retired after 37 years of service. Currently, he serves as an active member of the Missionary Baptist Ministers Conference in the Washington, DC Metro Area.

Rev. Jordan is an Ambassador of Christ, representing the Lord, preaching the word, and nurturing souls. He loves the Lord, for He (the Lord) heard his cry.  He is a humble servant, but known for his ‘tell-it-like-it-is’, ‘making it plain’ preaching style.
